I’m calling to ask for your support of SB21-273, the Michael Marshall Justice Act and the Marvin Booker Justice Act.

In 2020, Colorado Democrats pledged to continue passing meaningful legislation to address the harms of racialized policing and mass incarceration that are destroying lives in our state. SB273 is that next step.

SB273 is a carefully-designed, data-driven bill that will meaningfully reduce pretrial incarceration over low level offenses, and limit cash bond and police interaction with our most vulnerable neighbors. It will ensure that jail beds are reserved for people who are a safety risk, rather than people experiencing poverty.

Conservatives, law enforcement groups, and bail bond lobbyists are fear-mongering and misrepresenting SB273. Please stand against the lies and stand with your community in supporting this important bill.

We must change the culture of policing and incarceration that has permanently disabled Coloradans like Karen Garner and killed Elijah McClain, Reverend Marvin Booker, Michael Marshall, Jerid Thistle -- and harmed so many others.

Democratic leadership must hear that the community has a right to decide what “protect and serve” means, not police. Colorado ranks 6th in the U.S. for rate of police killings, and 5th in the rate of police killings of Black people. 54% of police killings since 2013 started over low-level or NO-level offenses, like traffic violations and mental health calls. 60% of the people in Colorado jails are there not because they are dangerous, but because they are too poor to pay money bond. Colorado deserves safety and justice for all.
